From the Board - January 2024
I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year. The Club has three items to update you on.
Working Bee Notice – 9th-10th March 2024
We are planning to have our March Working Bee on the weekend of the 9th-10th of March this year.
We have some additional external painting to complete on the blue section of wall/roofing along the roadside of the lodge, in addition to the usual preparations prior to the winter season.
Please let Michael Livermore know (email below) if you are available for the March working bee from a working or catering perspective.
Also, the Club is planning to strip out and renovate the bathrooms this year starting the weekend after Easter. As you can imagine, this will be quite the task so we will be looking for members who can help with stripping out of the bathrooms for preparation of the incoming trades. Anyone who is capable of performing tasks such as operating a jack hammer to carrying rubbish out to trucks will be required along with any trades out there that can contribute to the renovation. Some catering during this time will also be necessary.
If you could please express your interest in helping on these important projects at the lodge that would be great. Please email Michael directly at michael@rjlivermore.com.au.
2024 Annual General Meeting – Save the Date!
The 2024 Annual General Meeting is scheduled for the evening of Friday, 22nd March 2024 – Save the date!
Once again, this will be a hybrid meeting, both “in person & virtual” at Centro, 28 Stewart St, Wollongong. Formal official notification will be provided in due course.
If you are interested in helping run your Club by joining the Board, please complete and lodge the Director Nomination form attached. Please find the Director nomination form: PKSC Director Nomination Form.
SLOPES: Tree planting day - Telemark Place Lodges
SLOPES are proposing to hold a tree planting day in the Telemark Valley on Sunday 24 March 2024, involving the clubs along Telemark Place being Illabunda, Alexandra, Dianella, Telemark and Mirabooka. This initiative is to assist in countering the snowgum dieback that has been occurring in the alpine region, including around Illabunda.
As you may be aware, last year National Parks (NPWS) initiated a tree planting day for all the Clubs with lodges in Guthega. See here the report of the day: https://slopes.org.au/wp/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/1645-SLOPES-email-22-3-23.pdf.
The Guthega event was a huge success - over 500 snow gums were planted! - and will be ongoing.
What is proposed?
There is a need to roll out similar volunteer tree planting programs in Perisher and Smiggins as those resorts are affected by the same snow gum dieback issue as Guthega. After discussion with the NPWS Environment Liaison Officer, Amy Slocombe, it is proposed that we kick off the Perisher program by organising a tree planting day in our valley. We are aiming to plant 250 snow gums in a single day.
What do we need?
We need volunteers to help with all sorts of jobs including:
- Drilling/digging holes.
- Delivering and dropping compost into the holes.
- Planting the trees.
- Putting straw around the trees.
- Making tree guards.
- Hammering in the tree guards.
- Watering in the newly planted trees.
- Cooking the BBQ.
NPWS will be supplying all the trees, tree guards, compost, and straw, and they will provide us with a planting plan for the day. We just need people's time and enthusiasm to help with the revegetation of our beautiful part of the mountains! NPWS will provide free park entry for the weekend if needed. The plan is to have a free BBQ lunch (like Guthega, we are looking for a sponsor for this). And we will ask everyone to bring a plate for afternoon tea to hear from NPWS about what’s going on with dieback in the mountains. We are looking for around 20-25 volunteers to participate in this event and would love to see people, including children, from every lodge.
Interested?
If you are interested in attending, please email secretary@illabunda.com.au advising the names of those who would like to participate. Illabunda will provide free accommodation to those who would like to attend if the weekend goes ahead. If we have too much interest, room at Illabunda will be allocated on a first in first served basis.
